In a previous blog, “Loss of Bladder Control at Night,” I discussed the causes, potential solutions and precautions to take for those of us with occasional bladder urgency or leakage. While the potential causes are many and varied, I’d like to discuss one in particular—excess weight.

Are You Weighing Your Bladder Down?

Those few extra pounds may be contributing to your occasional bladder leakage. Carrying excess weight often puts pressure and added stress on your bladder, which may lead to occasional leakage or urgency issues. Making small lifestyle changes to maintain a healthy weight can help improve bladder health and may help to reduce these annoying, embarrassing occasions of bladder leakage.

Be Mindful of Your Diet

Let’s talk about three food and beverage choices that are bad for your bladder: caffeine, alcohol, and acidic or spicy foods. If you have occasional night-time urgency or leakage issues, try to reduce your consumption of these foods and drinks as they can irritate the bladder, and exacerbate your symptoms.
