Vaginal health is a pH balancing act, and all sorts of things can upset that balance. An imbalance in vaginal pH can result in an overgrowth of yeast and/or a reduction in healthy bacteria. Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do to maintain a healthy vaginal pH.

What Can Upset the Balance of Vaginal pH?

Sex, semen, menstruation, vaginal washes and wipes, certain medications and stress are among some common causes for an imbalanced vaginal pH.1 Any of these factors, individually or together, can produce an environment where non-beneficial bacteria and yeast begin to flourish.

How Can I Maintain a Healthy Balance?

Your body can handle a lot of the task itself. It’s up to you to create the conditions that allow your body’s natural mechanisms to control vaginal pH and microflora. It begins with hygiene.

Use warm water to wash the vulva. Avoid antibacterial soaps, douches, bath oils, talc, bubble baths, feminine sprays or deodorants—all of these can upset the balance.2

Next, consider using only undergarments that allow natural drying and avoid irritation. 100% cotton underwear is the way to go (especially white cotton, which minimizes the use of chemical dyes). Whenever leggings are required, avoid nylon pantyhose or panty girdles in favor of breathable, 100% cotton. Avoid wearing thongs, or at least for a prolonged period of time, and never overnight. When washing your clothing, avoid harsh detergents and fabric softeners.2

What Else?

During menstruation, opt for non-deodorant tampons instead of sanitary pads. Change them frequently and don’t leave them in all night. If you suffer from itching or dryness, consult your pharmacist for a recommended vaginal moisturizer. During intercourse, use only water-based lubricants. (Petroleum-based lubricants can encourage yeast growth and also weaken latex condoms.2)
