7 Tips for Promoting Vaginal Health

Vaginal health is a pH balancing act, and all sorts of things can upset that balance. An imbalance in vaginal pH can result in an overgrowth of yeast and/or a reduction in healthy bacteria. Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do to maintain a healthy vaginal pH.

What Can Upset the Balance of Vaginal pH?

Sex, semen, menstruation, vaginal washes and wipes, certain medications and stress are among some common causes for an imbalanced vaginal pH.1 Any of these factors, individually or together, can produce an environment where non-beneficial bacteria and yeast begin to flourish.

How Can I Maintain a Healthy Balance?

Use warm water to wash the vulva. Avoid antibacterial soaps, douches, bath oils, talc, bubble baths, feminine sprays or deodorants—all of these can upset the balance.2

When washing your clothing, avoid harsh detergents and fabric softeners.2

During menstruation, opt for non-deodorant tampons instead of sanitary pads. Change them frequently and don’t leave them in all night.
