WHAT IS A YEAST INFECTION AND WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
By way of explanation, I’d like to share the story of a typical patient, let’s call her “HJ”. HJ is a 38-year-old woman who had been treated for a sinus infection with a broad-spectrum antibiotic for 10 days. Since antibiotics can kill both good and non-beneficial bacteria in the body, HJ’s doctor advised her to take a probiotic—which she forgot to do.
Three days later, HJ called her doctor with symptoms of vulval and vaginal itching, a thick white cottage cheese-like discharge and moderate burning during urination.
Her symptoms reflected those of a yeast infection—the antibiotics had disrupted the balance of good vs. non-beneficial bacteria in her vaginal microbiome.
HOW TO DEAL WITH THE SYMPTOMS OF A YEAST INFECTION
Three of four women will experience a vaginal yeast infection in their lifetime.1 This is because the balance of the vaginal microbiome can be thrown off balance by a number of different stressors.
HJ’s doctor made two suggestions to address the big vaginal yeast infection symptoms:
- Use an anti-fungal vaginal cream such as clotrimazole. It is available over the counter in the USA and most other countries, so HJ can start applying it immediately until the infection is gone.
- Use a homeopathic method to relieve the symptoms of burning and itching—such as AZO Yeast® Plus.** It worked for HJ before and for many women who try it, so her doctor told her that it was fine to take again.
Like HJ’s doctor, I suggest these two steps to relieve the yeast infection symptoms.
HOW TO SUPPORT VAGINAL HEALTH
However, I also suggest that my patients take steps to promote their vaginal health regularly by restoring the natural balance of good bacteria and yeast in the vagina by taking an oral probiotic with different strains of good bacteria. Products like AZO Complete Feminine Balance™ are over the counter, so HJ can pick up a fresh bottle and add it to her routine immediately—I think all women should choose to take this daily, year-round.*
If you haven’t been diagnosed or treated for this in the past, run a fever, have had more than four yeast infections within the last two years, are pregnant or under age 16, see your doctor in person (no virtual visits are recommended for people with these symptoms).
